Dear all,
Had a real "Brian Wave" recently and magnetised the steel dipstick in my brand new Lidl lawnmower, and after only an hour's running time see below for the metal that I wiped off the tip of the dipstick. More than I expected! I magnetized the stick by stroking it several times one way with another magnet, one of those cheap neodymium magnets that you can glue into your drain plugs.
So the obvious next step was to magnetize the dipstick in my 1098 Traveller. I've already got a wrap around set of magnets circling the oil filter and another one in the drain plug (in my opinion you can't have too many magnets in the system) but the special point of a magnetic dipstick is to have the advantage of something that's easily and frequently inspected. I'll let you know what it picks up.
Regards to all, MikeN.

What a 'stroke' of genius!
It should get less as I think most of will be machining debris.

The debris from the Lidl lawnmower is to be expected.
Such devices are barely run at the end of production, just enough to make sure they work, so bound to be some production debris present.

Re: Magnetic dipstick
Without wanting to appear negative, I wonder if some metal debris might be dragged off the dipstick, when withdrawn, if there is little tolerance between the fit of block to stick.

Re: Magnetic dipstick
Magnetic drain plug is a good idea though.
Best wishes,
