Wanted 1098 or 1275 engine

Looking for 1098 or 1275 lump local to great yarmouth at a reasonable price , not these over inflated prices.

1098 engines tend to be cheaper than the 1275 variety, but the key is finding one close to home as travelling to collect or getting it delivered to you is costly.
The price you pay is again dependent on condition, one mans great condition is another mans wreck so choose carefully.

Do you have an engine already or are you upgrading engine size?

Yes still got one in the car , but looking for another so this one can be played with . The only morris we have with the 1098 the others are 1275 . So yep know about costing etc.
But when someone says I got one 200 , never tested or its seized etc take the Micky.
People atm are just after £££££££
Oh well keep looking

I think the days of finding a decent running 1275 for pennies are over I'm afraid, I bought a seized 1293 engine and head a few weeks back for £90 and that wants loads of work to get it running including a new set of pistons, rebore, crank grind, camshaft, seals, gaskets, rocker gear, pushrods, springs etc so pretty soon it adds up, hence why people ask upwards of £300 for a decent running engine.

I have to agree with murrayminor as regards finding a cheap 1275cc in line engine. Even the dismantled 1275cc Midget engine in my 'For Sale' post managed to sell for £343 and will still requires pounds to be spent on it to get it back running.
There is a severe shortage of serviceable 1275cc in line engines (especially the engine blocks) at the moment and that is why the prices are shooting up.
To overcome the shortage of 1275cc in line engine blocks the likes of MED engineering are converting 1275cc transverse blocks to the inline format.

Yer its mental.
Everything seem to be going high . Just have a look a price of pushbikes

Never mind got a offer of a engine , been sitting for years but for free not grumbling.

Remember not long ago throwing engines out lol .
Even 1275 ( my spare I sold cheap well, 50 plus a flip front ) sadly those days have gone .

Lest all sorted now ....... for now

Its very interesting that a well renowned company are resorting to modifying inline engines for RWD use.
There is obviously a call for the RWD engines and indeed a shortage if they are going to those lengths. Having said that they obviously have the machining capacity to conduct the modifications in house.

On the subject of the 1275 blocks, I have read that people in the US are now keeping the re-bore below 1380 in order to preserve the life of the blocks as the offset bore for the 1380 effectively negates any chance of restoring the block to a 1275 for the re-boring process to begin again.

Machine shops are only boring the engines to 1330 to preserve the remaining stock of blocks in the states.

The offset bored 1380cc 'A' Series can be re-bored again to 1400cc or even 1600cc with a bit of crankshaft stroking.

Boring to 1380cc gives at least one more re-bore without stroking the crankshaft.

I have a good serviceable offset bored 1275cc Midget block which is now 1400cc and there is plenty of life left in it yet. The problem with 1400cc engines is the cost of the pistons - a set costs as much if not more than a serviceable 1275cc Midget engine.

The 1400cc engine came to me fitted with Triumph pistons as there was little alternative back then.

I have been perusing the US MG Midget forum and due to the lack of A series engine blocks the specialists are not taking the engines out to more than 1330, so the block can then be re-sleeved back to 1275 and then bored out again on the next re-bore to 1293,then 1330, relined back to 1275 and so on.
Quite how they manage to require so many re-bores is beyond me.

Would you consider an automatic engine out of an Austin 1300 that has been garaged for many years? Not sure if it will fit a moggie, but I'm sure you will tell me.

What's your location .
Have got hold of a metro one to play about with , using a old moggy lump etc to see if easy to fit . Then afterwards it's going to be cut about so can teach the kids on how they work lol .

There is a lot of machining to undertake to convert a FWD A series to RWD configuration.
Plus you will need the front and rear engine plates, a suitable crankshaft, sump etc

Yep did it years ago , used the old engine for parts .
Only took a day or 2 to have it in and running. No expert tooling in a normal garage.

A description of how you did it would be appreciated especially by those thinking of doing the same.

How did you tackled the issue of the rear main bearing cap and the horseshoe top half of the oil thrower housing?

I ask as normally you have to fit a new rear main bearing cap/horseshoe and have it line bored with a specialist piece of machinery when converting an engine from transverse to in-line configuration. The issue of the rear main bearing cap and horseshoes as you know has to be tackled as the transverse engines do not have the oil thrower return facility as have the in-line engines.

Just like someone stated you cant put a trans engine in a minor, but you can .

I think a question was asked how you did the conversion.
I too would like to know, seeing as there is a shortage of RWD 1275 engine blocks, if it can be done without resorting to machining then all the better.

You were the one that stated that you had done the transverse to in line conversion in a normal garage without resorting to expert tooling.

The shortage of 1275cc in line blocks and your comment above led to me ask a perfectly simple and legitimate question asking you to describe how you carried out the conversion because I and many on here do not want to spend hard earned cash unnecessarily on un-warranted machining.
If you look through my previous posts you will see that I have in the past suggested converting transverse engines to in line on several occasions but have always warned those thinking of doing it of the machining costs.

For the record I was walking in 1948 and I was working in a BMC garage before the idea of transverse engines in Morris cars came about.
