Gearbox first motion shaft removal

Post by Bignig »

As a rookie I have just completed my engine rebuild and have started on the gearbox dismantling but I am having trouble removing the first motion shaft. Haynes manual states that once the third motion shaft has been removed via the rear of the gearbox which I have done then the first motion shaft can be tapped out forward with the bearing into the bell housing. I have tried doing this and moved the shaft forward so that the bearing is free but the rear cog on the shaft is too large to slip forward through the hole in the bell housing. Help please as I am stuck

Yes

What Les said, it helps to warm the aluminium casing a bit as well.

This is a case where the manual was not updated as the mechanical evolved. The offending cog was smaller on the smooth case due to different ratios and hence can exit through the case.
