Re: Little Black Box
alternator fitted to the other car, after it was stripped down and the vr removed
ahhhhhhh,
someone on the young members register has just made a very good point.
- the vr had to be earthed by those screws (didnt realise this -- oops )
testing it, i didnt screw the new vr down
and also, since the last long run, i've repainted the engine bay. Including removing the vr and painting behind it. and painting the screw holes to stop it rusting...
DOOOHHH!
Will have another look tomorrow

Re: Little Black Box
The VR has an earth lead connection ...it does not earth through the hold down screws. Has the dynamo been repolarised? Simple test for dynamo - take a wire and join both terminals together and then with engine running - connect that wire to the battery. What volts do you see now at the battery?? And with the heater and headlights on? Take the lead off before stopping the engine...

Re: Little Black Box
didnt get chance to do anything before 2 today, sonot as productive as i had hoped but nevertheless here's a summary of this afternoons events:
Continued chasing faults to the dynamo, and eventually discovered that i had done too thorough a job of painting the engine bay and totally insulated an earth. A lesson to all on checking the simple stuff first!
Reinstalled old VR and dynamo. all working well.
Removed speedo, steering wheel, glove box door and glove box liner to access the back of the heater and plumbed in new pipes, replacing the perished old ones.
Attempted to repair the old heater tap (threads gone in the base plate) but this failed under pressure.
Tidied the final few bits of wiring etc in the engine bay, and reassembled my spare dynamo.
Phew, time now for a shower before caroling at the church!
If anyone has a screw-type heater tap spare they're looking to sell could they please let me know?
Also still looking for a passenger side stainless 1/4 light.
Merry christmas all!

Re: Little Black Box
that was all after lunch!
If i'd have had the morning too, i'd have liked to flat the paint down a bit under the bonnet, but looks like that'll have to wait until after christmas...
