What is the point of ticking the box to stay logged in, when I HAVE TO LOG IN EVERY TIME I want to visit the site?

What was wrong with the old system?

It's gone a bit random for me. Sometimes it won't ask me to log in for days, then it'll ask me twice in half an hour. Very strange.

I haven't changed anthing, just removed the login box. It hasn't changed the way anything works

Mine is now back to normal - not sure what happened to make mine troublesome but it coincided with the change to the log-in box.
