Early build Lowlights

Post by kenscar130 »

Hi all
I own 4 Minors - An early build 1949 Lowlight, a 1952 Highlight 2 door , 1 1958 1000 2 door and a 1958 1000 4 Door.

I am interested to know how many early build Lowlights are still known

Mine is SMM2030 and dated by the BLMT Heritage certificate as built 26 Jan to 2 Feb 1949 and dispatched on 2 feb 1949. All numbers from body, engine and key numbers match. She retains all the early identifying features.
She has done 87000 genuine miles and has only had a bit of cosmetic restoration done since I purchased her from the little old lady original owner in 1987.I have just done a full motor rebuild.

Id be interested of hearing from anyone else with an early build Lowlight, I think this one is one of the oldest 5 or 10 surviving cars in Australia.

There are about 205 lowlight MMs in Australia and New Zealand on my register. SMM 2030 according to my records was previously registered as MNO 049 in 2001. Assuming all the others still survive SMM 2030 is the 8th oldest. I have just written a long reply to your other entry and it has disappeared so I will have to start again.

I have SMM 3048 but not roadworthy at this time! Just out of interest Mike, where does this one come in the "oldest survivors" list? :-?

There are a few early low lights in Australia.

I know of:
#922
#1049 (?)
#1125
#1228
#1313
#2406

There are also others listed in the Australian Low Light book that was published back in the late '80s.

SMM 3048, LMM 982 is 29th on my list but I know that several earlier cars no longer exist so I would expect it to be 20 to 25th. Is it a 2 door?
Scott. I have all except SMM 1049 and SMM 2406 on the register although there seems to be some confusion as to which are in Australia and which are in New Zealand probably because they both have towns with the same name. Could you email me your list so I can check mine?
Cheers

Hi Mike,
#1049 was on eBay earlier this year in Victoria, Australia. I'm not exactly sure of the number though. Definitely in the 1000s though.

#2406 is sitting in my garage.

The restored 'brown' car in my signature is #1228.
The pictures of the unrestored green(ish) car is #2406.

I also have #922 but I don't think I've posted photos up here of that car.

That's the only information I have on the register. Could you please email me with the body type, registration plate and your name and address so that I can complete the details.
Many thanks.

Would SMM/58954 not place it in about august '50?

My lowlight is 57192/ engine 61919 and that was started in Cowley in July '50 and finished in Holland at Molenaar's Morris Assembly Plat in November '50

When you say 'early build' lowlights, when do you mean up to?

Mine is not VERY early although it was built between 27th April and 9th May 1949. SMM/16248

The significance of your car is that it was the 1st production car to be fitted with high light wings.I think I have some newspaper articles about the car somewhere.
