VIN and registration area Decoders

Post by theminorsite »

I've been playing with a script for these two for a while, where you could enter your VIN number and 'decode' it for your vehicle, and something similar for the location portion of registration numbers. Trouble was, it was a nightmare to figure out all the permutations of input someone might make and have the script figure out the relevant bits and discard the rest.

I think I have them both working correctly now, so would you all be so kind as to 'test' them for me - don't sweat it, no data is 'held', only decoded and displayed on screen.
http://theminorsite.co.uk/vin-lookup and
http://theminorsite.co.uk/area-lookup
Note for the VIN decoder it doesn't prevent 'false positives' - for example it'll happily tell you that you have a 1954 registered Million built at Adderley Park if you input the data to do that. I did consider having the script detect permutations that were not possible, but it would take me forever to work them all out. I might well get round to it though, if this proves popular.

Any feedback very welcome

cheers
Mike

Hi Mike,

It doesn't seem to understand about left hand drive cars.

My car number is MAT 3L 741121, it gives me invalid number message.

Thanks,

Ron

Hmmmm, it's not wrong, I am - my records show that the only possible digit in the 5th spot is 'D' for DeLuxe. If you take the L out, it appears to be correct. Can you fill me in at all on this 'L'? cheers!

Hi,
I tried both, and I get the same mensage:
"Production records show that this vehicle was built in 1955 :o and has the early Series II 803cc engine, developing a staggering 30 brake horsepower.Your VIN plate carries the aditional suffix "F", wich signifies that your car was built at Adderley Park Factory."

My question is: the first registration (UK) is from 01.03.1972, BBT 213K
Chassis Nr. MAU5325378F in the factory register list I thought it was from 1971

Are explanations for that?
Cheers

Mike,

As I understand the decoding of the car number is as follows using MAT3L741121;
1st prefix letter-Name M-Morris
2nd prefix letter-Model (cubic capacity) A-800-999cc
3rd prefix letter-Body type T-4 seat Tourer
4th prefix letter-Series of model 3
5th prefix letter (used when vehicles L-Left hand drive
differ from standard
RHD)

This information is from the General Information pages from the parts manual. I only have copies of the two pages detailing the car number.

As far as determining standard or deluxe, I don't believe that can be detemined from the car number. From the heritage certificates my convertible is a deluxe and the 4 door I once had MAS3L700564 is a standard.

I hope this helps,

Ron

LCVs had their own numbering sequence starting at 501 in 1953 to 327368 in 1971.
The codes for LCVs, OE,OF,OG,OHC,OJE,MAV,MAU,MAQ,MAG,MAE need to trigger the LCV sequence for the formula to work correctly.

Hi Mike

I have just tried the decoder for my pick-up. The "VIN" is OFF11/56450.

The decoder produces all the right information as I understand it except that the final comment says

"Production records show that this vehicle was built in the period up until January 1954."

According to the V5, the vehicle was first regiostered on 1st May 1957.

Unfortunately, I have absolutely no history with this vehicle except for a tax disc from 1st Jan 1958.

Any thoughts?

Yes sorry, I've only recently discovered that, while the decoder works with all vehicles, the 'Year of build' element doesn't work with any LCV. I've identified how this has happened - the data I have for vehicle numbering only applies to cars and Travellers - and I'm trying to get opening and closing numbers for LCV's per year. If I can get the numbers I need soon (*) I'll just leave things as they are for the interim, but if its going to take a while then I'll modify the script to only give the "Your car was built in..." element for saloons, tourers and Travellers!

To get build years correct, would need to separate both passenger & LCV chassis nos.

501 - 1294082
501 - 327368

Bit of a fiddle, but build year for CKD's could be done - disclamer stating up to 3yrs (LCVs only) later than Hm.Mkt. models - whereas PKD's generally a year later.

For example, 159xxx pre-allocated chassis nos. used for both CKD cars & LCVs, ie; a car with 159xxx vin would be a 1952 (with a 6 digit APHM engine), whereas a 159xxx LCV would be a 1963 (with a 5 digit 10ML engine).

To confuse matters, New Zealand CKD 1098cc LCVs didn't have chassis prefixes, just numbers....hence a GENUINE 1952 1098cc Minor LCV!!🤣

"Minor chassis, cab, body & engine numbers, a subject in its own right!"🤣
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!
