reversing light

Post by gluck »

Hello,
Is there a reversing light on the minor 1000? If not, is it possible to fit one and how?

Not as Standard, but there are few ways to fit one, by mounting it on a bracket on the bumper or possibly on the bodywork if you could find a suitable one, the wiring can be done in various ways, by a switch with an illuminated light on the dashboard (thats a requirement over here but may be different in Belgium), get hold of a midget gearlever housing as this has a built in switch, I believe one of the spicailist over hear also has a switch device that will fit the standard Minor gearbox and works off the gear lever although I have not actually seen one.

No, not as standard.

Motor parts places usually stock reversing light kits but in the case of Minor it would have to be operated by a hand switch in the dashboard somewhere rather than coming on automatically when you select reverse. An auto switch is possible with parts from a Midget box or with a custom made switch.
When I fitted a reversing light (Hella kit) I used a small 12V bulb adjacent to the switch. it was very bright and it was pretty much impossible to forget to switch the thing off!
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

phoned to the Belgian MOT.
I may have a switch for the light. So i'll place it at the same place that the fog light.

A finger switch for the light is a bit less practical. I am quite sure that Birmingham Minor centre do a switch which mounts with the gearbox screws.

You want a fog light as well??

In most countries the rules only apply to new cars.
eg. cars before 1963 not not have to have seatbelts
So if a car was not manufactured with a reversing light or fog light we do not have to fit one.

Do the rules in belgium apply to older cars?

It build one from scratch, and it was very easy.
Use a low profile micro switch with a long arm.
The mount needs to follow the curvature of the gear selector housing, two holes to allow the gear selector housing retaining bolts to travel through. and two smaller holes for the micro switch. Nb: you will need to slot one of the micro switch mounting holes to give adjustment, obviously the mirco arm will have to be tweeked.
The mount was fabricated out of 2mm steel. I also fabricated a rubber gasket to go between the mount and the gearbox, to stop any ringing.

Mr. Grumpy does a kit which fits onto the standard 1098 box. As far as I know it's simply a case of taking the rubber cover off and placing the switch there.
