Hi all, just got my 1098 block back from the machine shop which is now 1132cc, had the flywhheel lightend and balanced must have had at least a kilo taken off, now the cost of this all is getting quite high, the car will only be used for the road revving to between two and five thousand rpm max, do i really need a damper on the other end?.

Sounds like a good plan, if you've gone to all that expense a damper is small fry!

YES! Or at least - I strongly advise you do. But 5000 rpm is not high - why did you lighten the flywheel if you don't intend to rev the engine? Do remember though that 6000 is pretty much the limit for a 1098 crank - perhaps 6500 momentarily.

Yes i've spent quite a lot of money on the engine but I had too because it was shot, so I wasn't relishing the idea of another ninty quid on a damper, I believe lightening the flywheel is beneficial from pickup and would improve the 0-40 mph time not because i want to use the higher end of the rpm much.

Try also searching for a harmonic balancer too - it's the same thing just in 'American speak'. Strangely, I bought one off e bay for £10 from a guy in the States and once shipped back to me, cost a total of £15 - far cheaper than any that were or are advertised over here :-? As Roy has said in the past, search for these in scrap yards on the Mini and Metro engines.

Nothing under Mini, but if you put 'Midget pulley' into eBay there are a number of damper versions being offered. Also 1 comes up with searching for 'Metro pulley'. No particular bargains, but if you are not needing it immediately, might be worth putting a 'saved search' on for one?

If you do buy a S/H damper make sure that the rubber is not perished!
And YES I would fit a damper to the crankshaft. It does help preserve the crankshaft.
I agree with bmcecosse do not pay 90 pounds for a damper.
