LHD door locks

Hi,

I have a 1954 LHD Series 2, with 4 doors.

I only have one door with an external lock, and it's on the passenger side. Is this original?

I am rather scared to lock the car with the key, because if the single almost-70-year-old lock decided to stop working, I'd be locked out :o

Apparently that is so. It wouldn’t have endeared the cars to owners in countries with LHD. Doubtless one of the reasons why Minor sales were poor in such markets. Don’t worry about the lock failing though, they are extremely reliable.

Thanks. It appears that Morris did the absolute minimum necessary to convert the cars to LHD; e.g. the bonnet release is on the right (British people constantly complain about cars with the bonnet release on the left...), and the hilarious extension rod on the accelerator pedal that operates the accelerator cable in the right-hand footwell. My car has the early dash, and the panels for that had to be made in reverse for LHD, but they soon put a stop to that :)

As the locks wear they allow more key shapes and sizes to work so your original will always work - as will a screwdriver probably.

The MMOC Chairmans LHD tourer only had a lock on the passenger door, made it great fun locking it up lol

The early doorlocks are ambidextrous , an anyone with a little skill can change them over...

The problem here would be the hole in the door skin for the exterior lock.

Was going to fit lockable on both sides of my '58 four door,to go with the central locking , had the locks apart and made a right to a left but ended up not fitting it.
Will try to dig out the photos later.

John ;-)

Some years ago I purchased a good 4 door handle and lock to fit to the passenger door but then couldn't be bothered to fit it. I sold it to Jeff-d on this forum in the end.
