Patches. How many?

Post by paulk »

Out of interest anyone know how many patches is too many as far as the MOT man is concerned?
If the person who does mine in the not too distant future (I'm an extreme optimist) has a mate helping them and they use their fingers and toes whilst counting they might just get down one sill  . well maybe thats a slight exageration but not much of one.
I know I need a complete new floor/sills but I just wondered how long you can keep cutting out the rot and patching up before the MOT bod says stop or the DVLA kick off cos more of your car has been welded by you than BMC

Paul, as long as the welding is continuous, and covers all the holes, then its legal, but considering sill panels are about £10-15 each, why not replace all the rust in the sill with proper repair panels and make a decent job of it??

patching patches is a waste of time really...
As mentioned above - sill panels are not that expensive and does save a lot of time in the long run if you do a reasonable job (cut all the rot away clean up well, use a zinc pre-weld primer etc..)

I agree sills are dirt cheap

But By next year I'll need both sills , Floor outer edge and a new crossmember oh and maybe the front of the engine side member.

To be fair I am cutting out rot and lapping the patches everywhere I can but I'm just trying to spread the work out a bit.

This year has been doing the rear spring hangers properly (new ESM panels) and rebuilding the A pillars so the doors shut.

To be fair the cars a shed but I've learn't more about welding thin plate upside down than if i'd done a thousand clean workbench welds. I also now know exactly where to look/tap on a Minor next time someone says they've got a cheap easy to restore classic!!!!

If you've started to weld in some decent repair panels- as mentioned the ESM spring hanger ones- and proper ones for the a post, then I don't see anything wrong with some MOT patching as long as the long term intention is to replace with proper panels. But if one sill is totally rotten it might be quicker and easier to replace the whole lot than lap weld in lots of patches.

It sounds like a good long-term strategy for survival of the car- a rolling resto!

Nothing wrong with that, i confess, i've "let in" a few small patches here and there on my Traveller as well as replacing whole sections with new panels.
