Can a traveller be driven without the wood or rear roof?

Post by Thomas.hewitt05 »

As the wood rotten on my traveller I was wondering if the vehicle has enough structural strength to drive around without the rear roof or wood so I can move it to a safe working area.

My concern would be the state of the metal - if the wood is rotten, then what is the steel like? In general, if the steel is good then I can see no objection to removing the roof and most of the timber. The cab and "chassis" were assembled separately from the rear section and they were brought together only late in the manufacturing process. Most Travellers can have fairly rotten wood and yet still be driven quite safely. The proviso, is that to be used on a road, the car must be roadworthy. Ask yourself whether it would pass an MOT?

The traveller timber appears not to be covered on MOT tests nowdays and tests are no longer required if MOT exempt....however there is insufficient strength in the chassis for normal road use without the timber frame attached as it forms part of the structure of the vehicle.

I would expect to be prosecuted if found using it on the road in that condition...and it would be difficult to demonstrate that it was safe to drive unless perhaps some appropriate reinforcement had been added.

You would also not have any rear lights if the wood were removed.
