Engine Bay Push/pull starter

Post by keith rogerson »

Hi I wonder if anyone can help?
My previous Moggy was a 1968 convertible, and it had an under the bonnet push/pull starter on the solenoid, great when installing new ignition bits etc.
i now have a 1968 pick up which Im slowly tidying the engine bay up.
Can you still get them?
Cheers

So you're referring to a remote solenoid with a 'push button' option.
There are some still around, but they are a different style to the one used on the Moggie.
Look for a Lucas BCA4501 or SRB316.
They cost in the region of £30-£35, about 2-3 times as much as the standard Moggie type

I’ve never really needed to turn over the engine when installing/diagnosing ignition parts/failures. The only time is when simply checking for an ignition spark immediately after the engine fails to run.

I had one of the square type (Lucas) with the button underneath. That failed decades ago and now that type is no longer available although the current Lucas square type is almost identical but no button. I fitted a round Lucas solenoid with button underneath and it works well. I had a cheap solenoid jam in the on position which is very dangerous and nearly caused a fire so don’t buy a cheap one!

I’ll look for the model number shortly

The one I used was a Lucas SRB 316 as mentioned by Geoberni. An expensive toy but I have had my car for a very long time and I missed not being able to start it from under the bonnet. Really not that useful but....

You can see the solenoid installed in the top left of the photograph.
