Fuse rating (inline fuse)

I managed to blow a fuse today. The first fuse I've ever blown in 34 years with my Morris!

It was my own fault. I was fitting a new number plate lamp holder and idiotically managed to get the wires round the wrong way. Anyway, I knew that the fuse concerned was the inline fuse hear the voltage regulator. Inside I found an 35 Amp fuse (blown of course). I thought this was supposed to be a 10 Amp fuse?

Yes that’s correct. This is the one in the in-line plastic holder for side lights, tail lights, number plate lights. I think it should be 10 Amp because 35 seems an awful lot.

Side lights and number plate lights typically 5w each. Some number plate lamps have 1 bulb, some have 2; so day 6 x 5 = 30w. Speedo bulbs 2 x 2w; so total load say 40w at 12 volts = < 5 amps. I have always used a 5 amp fuse without problems; but 10 should be fine, definitely no higher.

Thank you Simon. The 35A fuse present blew instantly with the dead short I had inadvertently created but I knew that fuse was not the correct rating. I have what I think is a 10A fuse but there is nothing written on it so I cannot tell! I put a 35A fuse back and everything is working but I will change it as soon as I get what I know for sure is a 10A fuse.

The 10A fuse is marked on the cap I have discovered. The old (incorrect) 35A fuse is marked in the tube.

I will change to the correct fuse in the morning.

Earlier cars ie my 1957, did not have the separate fuse for the lights. Everything fused goes through the 35 A fuses.
