Tyre Wear

Post by myoldjalopy »

Hello peeps,
I noticed my front O/S (driver's side) tyre is wearing smooth on its outer edge only. All the other tyres look OK. Any thoughts?

Yes - too much toe-in; check the tracking.

Only on one side would likely indicate a wheel bearing or a steering joint.

In order of likelihood ....
I would suggest:
Worn Track Rod End
Pot Hole bending the Steering arm
Wheel bearing....

A good point, although the query was

Tyre pressures will normally be both sides worn if under inflated and the centre only if over inflated....

The eye bolt, top trunnion and tie bar bushes.
If they are worn it could effect the way the tyre wears.

Additionally - suspension height can effect the camber which can effect tyre wear.

All you can do is check that all front suspension bushes are sound, the suspension height is correct and the toe in is also correct.

Phil mentioned the eye bolt, hopefully the area where it passes through the ‘chassis’ leg has not weakened.

Well, I couldn't find anything wrong so I took the car to a local classic car garage. They couldn't find anything wrong either. Its taken 10 years to wear to this point so, as its still within legal limits, I've put it in the boot as the spare and see how it goes.

Now you tell us!. You really mean you have not rotated your wheels in 10 years!

As a matter of interest - how many miles has it taken to wear out this tyre? Are the others worn, but more evenly? Is a cheap make that could have had 25% of production below spec? Any other possibilities?

My wheels rotate every time I drive the car
But seriously, I don't know how many miles. The other tyres seem pretty good. Maybe it was a fault in the tyre?
