Doing away with the contact box

Post by lukedauvergne »

Iv now got an alternator on my car and was wondering if that means I can do away with the contact box and how I would go about doing it. Does anyone have any diagrams for this job?

It's neater to leave it in place. And you never know when it could be useful to put on a dynamo in an emergency......

When we used to fit Fiat engines we used to remove the box. It was easy if you knew which wires to connect.

I seem to remember there being a tech tips article on fitting the Fiat which included wiring diagrams.

Oh it's not difficult to do - but is it 'neater' to do as above - or just leave the box in place ??

Well my plan is to remove the box and have the wires running up under the dash to clean up the engine bay I've got the marina peddle box in my car which makes space for the contact box etc limited. also the box is damaged so if I can get rid of it the better.

I'm fairly sure the Owen Burton manual had a page on rewiring the regulator for an alternator. The regulator stayed in situ but was re-wired. From that diagram it's easy to work out how to remove the regulator entirely. Perhaps someone still has that information?

You just need to join the A and A1 wires together. The F and D wires will already have been removed and used for the alternator.
