Smiths Auxiliary Water Pump
At long last I have managed to buy one of the original Smiths Auxiliary water pumps for the early Series MM engines.
Instead it has the early block drain that connects to the bottom of the radiator and has the take-off pipe for fitting the Smiths pump. My current plan, for this project, is to get a blanking plate made up to replace the block mounted water pump, and fit the Smiths auxiliary unit.
But, there is a part missing for the Smiths pump - note the rubber bung on the pump shaft in the first picture.
This is what the shaft looks like with the bung removed From another one of my posts, David McCullough had shown a picture of the pump he has got (never fitted) which has an oiler, like those on the early C39 Dynamos. I have taken one of these off the dynamo I will be fitting to the car, and it fits a treat on the water pump. Anyone have a spare oiler they would be prepared to sell to me?
The one removed from the dynamo appears to be filled with some form of graphite grease on a long spring-loaded wad.
Although Bryan Gostling will be looking through his vast collection of literature, to find the Smiths fitting instructions, I'm wondering if anyone has a scanned copy to hand?
The seller of the pump, at the 75th Anniversary Rally, did have a photocopy of one but, at the time, I thought I had the instructions at home, but have been unable to find them.

I've ordered from the Dynamo company.
I've also rerun my "brass oiler for dynamo" search and my Google search engine has now come up with both items!
Before I posted, all I got was the oilers for lathes etc.
So, many thanks for the response - now need to find a couple of straps to attach it to the dynamo.

I also recently picked up an auxiliary water pump but without instructions. A friend of mine is going to copy some instructions he has and send them to me. If and when I get them, I'll get a copy to you. No idea when I'll get them. He said 'soon'....

Although my Minor is much later I am very interested in this thread. What a marvellous find.
How does the belt stay on the pulley (since there is no groove)?
Incidentally, Pete Jury from Classic Dynamo and Regulator Conversions sold me one of his solid state RB106 units and also rebuilt a dynamo for me. Both are excellent and Pete is very helpful.

Aha, the belt doesn't go around the Smiths device, it sits on top of the belt!

Here is the promised mock-up, albeit a day late, sorry.
I do have a dynamo end for mounting the fan blades and I just need a couple of fitting straps to go around the dynamo. George.

So George, that's what that pump's for! I've had one on the shelf for over 50 years and have been wondering all the time. But, blimey, the ticket price of £50's high; do you want another one? Mine's scruffy but complete and turns - but no lubricator, of course!
When visiting Farnboro' (we're ex-North Camp - are you ex-RAE too?) I've often thought of hunting you down and having a stare at your fleet. Private Message me if you're interested.

How much do they cost then? Surely rather rare. Even a common Lucas C40 dynamo costs good money to be professionally overhauled. The refurbished Lucas C39PV dynamo (with oiler), in the picture, cost me £25.00 (a very very good price) at one of the Beaulieu Autojumbles (I've flashed it for +ve Earth use and tested the output), the Smith's auxiliary pump was labelled as £60 ono and the seller also had the metal fronted "beige" recirculating heater (unmolested condition) labelled at £80 ono, but I made an offer and finally agreed to pay £120 for the pair.
"Uncle", my current low-light project, did come with a Smiths heater, but the later black Bakelite-fronted version as fitted to my Traveller and the grey 4-door saloon.
The Smiths pump is like Hen's Teeth, so there are no guide prices - value is what the seller and buyer agree on (depends how badly someone needs one).
The Dynamo was originally manufactured in March 1949, if I've decoded the marking correctly.
