?SL Seems to be an age related number, so if yours is the original plate then shout up!

I've added the ones I know, but shout up if you've got another. Theres some which I dont think would have ever been issued (QSL, ZSL)

I think "SL" registrations came from Clackmannanshire - nr Sterling, Scotland (they didn't issue many there so had them left over) These were then issued to cars who had had their original plates transferred (like mineOriginally 947 ELH)

Dan

A couple of weeks ago we were walking just outside Castleton when CSL890, a light Blue traveller drove past

It looked to be in very good condition, it is still out there and being used

Is there any way to find out where the three letters came from ... mine is KMR

Answered my own question: Maidstone, Kent

Alain,

It's the last two letters that signify where the car was registered, not the first two. Your car therefore has a Swindon registration (MR) rather than Maidstone (KM).

?SL numbers are replacement numbers issued by Swansea when the original reg was transferred. you will probably find that every one on a Morris is also non transferable.

The SL series was used because the series was never issued as a 3 letter/number combination.

Originally issued by Clackmannan in Scotland in 1903 and starting with SL1, 63 years later they had only issued up to SL 9179. ASL was only issued with from 1964 onwards with a B, C, D etc suffix. Eg ASL 123B.

Hope this helps
