crank shaft seal

i have a morris minor 1000 1961 i have a oil leak coming from crank shaft i bought a filter which is like a fabric wool looking one but when opening the front cover there does not seem to be a wool looking seal just a plastic looking one any help with this?

Can I assume you are talking about the front crankshaft seal - the one in the timing cover ? Only early cars had the hopeless 'wool' seal - later cars have the better lipped rubber seal. But chances are the problem is actually caused by pressure within the crankcase - caused by leaking piston rings and inadequate crankcase ventilation. Connect the rocker cover breather directly to the carb intake - NOT the air filter and the fumes will be extracted much more efficiently. Meantime - get a new ribber seal - and be sure to 'centralise' the timing cover on the crankshaft before finally tightening the timing cover securing screws.
