Insurance
Hi again
Daft question number one & two:
What’s the best insurance company to use in your opinion?
And of course realistically a 19 year old with 18months experience on his own insurance for his personal every day car can expect to pay approximately how much do you reckon for a second car/garaged minor?

Re: Insurance
I've had decent experience with two of the common insurers - Footman James & Lancaster Insurance.
Best thing to do is to call around classic specialists such as those - steer clear of non-specialists - and find out what they quote. My premium was in the region of £400 as a new driver, but I was already over 25 by then.

Re: Insurance
It'll be impossible for anyone on here to give you estimates or guidance as there are SO many variables....
All you can do is shop around. The Club used to offer a "young members" insurance scheme through Footman James which was very competitive at the time my youngsters were young enough to need it! Certainly worth an enquiry.

Re: Insurance
Adrian Flux did the best all round deal for my circumstances, as previously stated shop around a bit first.

Re: Insurance
I'll be interested to see where you get on this, my son is 17 and learning at the moment we do have a company car he can drive but after 6 years restoring the minor he would like to drive it!

Re: Insurance
All I can add is, dont forget to talk "limited mileage" if youre not going to travel a lot, that will reduce the cost a little, also talk security, something as simple as a disklok or going up market with a dash cam will help.

Re: Insurance
Just a thought as I have no idea how they handle new/young driver insurance but... LV (a.k.a Liverpool Victoria) Insurance.
I sold my Minor, insured with FJ, last month. Incidentally, I'm STILL waiting the partial premium refund due following cancellation.
Instead of the Minor, I have a Marina 1.8TC. Mrs.PB's Ford Focus is insured with LV, who also offer classic car insurance. Insuring with LV attracted an 'existing policy (at the same address) discount'. No-quibble agreed value based on my valuation supported by six recent photos of the car. Salvage retention. For me, a more-than-adequate 3,000 mile annual allowance, with some lee-way if I notify them - not sure how this works.
I don't live in a particularly 'good' postcode area. The car is kept on the driveway. It has a Krooklok type device and a 'secret switch' type immobiliser. I have 3 penalty points on my licence and a declared medical condition . Total premium... £16 less than the Minor was with Footman James.

Re: Insurance
Tried with FJ on line and went through all the rigmarole for both of us but after 25 minutes of inputting details said couldn’t do it on line and had to call!
Infuriating.
Weird too as I’m a driving instructor and both my son and I have clean licences.
Still, it won’t stop us and as soon as we find the right car we’ll get sorted.
I’ll keep you posted!

Re: Insurance
Just tried to get a quote for my 17 year old son who is still a learner from Footman James, £1158 for a 198 saloon and they can't tell me how much extra when he passes.
Flux are quoting £1060 once he has passed his test.
Given I have a company car he can learn in I don't think we will bother at the moment !
