Re: help needed with abbreviation
I guess you were born long after 1971
Pounds, Shillings and Pence.
20 Shillings to the Pound, 12 Pence to the Shilling (so 240 to the Pound)
So your task was the pre decimalisation equivalent of £4.57½ Edited as I found a way to put 1/2 in small size. and not write £4.57 1/2

Re: help needed with abbreviation
sorry, no, i was born in 1955.
Thanks for your explanation. I thought of it, but "d" for pence did not make sence for me....

Re: help needed with abbreviation
Blimey, you've got a year over me and I can easily remember pre-decimal
But glad I could help.
Put it down to a Terry Wogan 'Senior Moment'
The £/s/d all originated from Latin coins as far as I know.

Re: help needed with abbreviation
"In the classical Roman Empire, standard coinage was established to facilitate business transactions. 12 denarii were rated equal to 1 gold solidus – a 4th-century Roman coin that was rare but which still circulated; and, since 240 denarii were cut from one Roman libra of silver, 240 denarii therefore equalled one pound (livre in France, peso in Spain, etc.). Following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, new currencies were introduced in Western Europe though (Eastern) Roman currencies remained popular. In the Eastern Roman Empire, the currencies gradually evolved away from the solidi and denarii. "

Re: help needed with abbreviation
I should say here that I've now found out that minijojo is actually in Germany, I hadn't realised as his English is so good.
So a little embarrassed for thinking he was a youngster that didn't know about £sd.
It's so annoying and frustrating that this seems to be the only Forum I frequent that doesn't let a member add a location to their profile.
Yet another thing that's wrong with it!
