Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?
Thank you. I've texted my branch, Surrey Hills and I will wait to hear what they say. If I can get a crane to use for a short while I may as well take the engine out and do the whole engine bay properly. It would be so much easier and a better job. It may well be that I would then not need to get a specialist to refurbish the engine bay and that would save me a lot of money (that I don't have anyway )philthehill wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 5:57 pm I have just checked and my own local branch Hampshire MMOC have a engine crane plus other equipment for loan.

Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?
Success!
A branch member has kindly offered to lend me his engine crane. I have said I am going to wait until it is warm enough to apply paint and he is happy with that.
Now I am going to be tempted to replace the wiring loom at the same time........It would mean no wires in the way when doing the engine bay and my car does need a new loom. The old one is original and mice have eaten bits of the outer braided covering. It's also getting brittle and that spells trouble.

I could hide in the empty engine bay and do the Flintstones thing?

Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?
I had a reply from Bryan Gostling regarding engine mount rubbers from MMOC Spares. He told me "Sorry I no longer have access to club spares. They are all in storage pending a volunteer taking them on"
So I will have to go with what ESM offer.

Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?
Why do you need to take the engine out to paint round there (obv. I understand why you'd need to when fitting the rubbers)?
I still have an engine in and earlier today I was standing with one foot inside the engine bay (being careful not to stand on the brake pipes).
I mean you don't even have the issue of clambering over the front panel/radiator (quite painful on the knees!) so I'm sure with a few contortions you could get both legs up and over and stand/kneel beside the engine to paint etc.
(I was removing the battery, the battery has no handle, it was proving too much for me in terms of reach so in I went - in case you're wondering).

Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?
I want to do the rubbers, replace both engine mount towers (and paint underneath towers) and replace the engine front plate. I will probably also fit a new wiring loom so the less there is in the engine bay the easier it will be for me to do the best job I can.Chief wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 9:45 pm Why do you need to take the engine out to paint round there (obv. Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?
In that case I would go for a good used engine mount rubber.
You have a choice from:- MG Midget/Sprite 948cc/1098cc/1275cc. The A30/A35/A40. Morris Minor 803cc/948cc/1098cc. They all use the same engine mount.
There are several used mounts on 'e' bay and some look to be serviceable.
You may be able to obtain a pair of good used mounts from the membership on here.

When did you last check out new mounts?philthehill wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 5:08 pm New engine rubber mounts tend to be made with harder rubber these days whilst the original ones are just right in that they support the engine yet are flexible enough to absorb vibrations and engine movement.
I'm just curious as I notice ESM list them as "Correct Soft Compound" so I wondered if in the past you or others had contacted them about their being the wrong softness causing them to change to ones that were more like the originals.
.
All the times I've seen them, and even on your photos - it never dawned on me they were bolt on parts

Chief
Not very long ago and with my Shore hardness gauge (see photo below) and the Shore hardness of the new engine mounts was greater than the original BMC engine mounts I have.
Regarding the statement by ESM as The 'Correct Soft Compound' - it would have been better stated as a specific 'Shore Hardness' which is the correct technical term for categorizing the hardness/softness of compounds and which would have provided some relativity between products/suppliers.

50 quid is the retail price we plebs pay. The company making it will have a huge markup and only cost them less than 10 quid I would guess. So 4000 quid is a bargain!les wrote: ↑Thu Feb 29, 2024 5:46 pmCheck my maths because something doesn’t add up ! At £50 for 5 litres it would cost £20,000 to clean the chassis ! Why not buy another Land Rover.

Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?
I actually already have a pair of mounting rubbers from ESM but I don't have any means of measuring how compliant they are in a scientific way. Just by squeezing them they do seem rather hard. I will start hunting for some decent ones but I am obviously not going to change for second hand rubbers in poor condition.
I noticed that one of the engine towers is really only held on to the car by 3 bolts as one of the mounting holes is split.

Oh well. I expect there are plenty of sound secondhand ones about still if not available new I reckon your Minor is in unusually good condition around the engine bay and inner wings. They were poorly painted from new around the engine bay, so very few original cars look smart in those areas.

Thank you. Yes, ESM sell new towers and they are not expensive.ManyMinors wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2024 11:44 am Oh well. My car is really very unusually good considering it has never been restored or even resprayed. The reason for this is that during my 35 year tenure it has never lived outside. Even when I was a student in Scotland (hardly an ideal climate for a tourer!) I rented a dry garage. It was cheap rent but nowhere near where I lived so I had to take a 30 minute bus journey to get the car. A bit mad and my friends thought I was ridiculously eccentric but now I have last laugh! Numerous oil leaks all over the place have also helped preserve the metal.

Re: Better than nothing rust treatment?
Oil leaks do have their uses, the only area of the floor on mine that didn't need restoring was where oil had been protecting it.

Further to the ESM engine mounts.
ESM list:-
Pt No: AHA5484 as a Minor 1000 engine mount ('e' bay sales)
and
Pt No: MNT101 as a correct softness Minor 1000 engine mount (web site sales).
I note that Pt No: AHA5484 is not recognised on the ESM web site.

Yes and to complicate matters I bought from ESM on eBay so I don’t know what I’ve got. I’ll phone them and ask next weekphilthehill wrote: ↑Fri Mar 01, 2024 5:34 pm Further to the ESM engine mounts.

Well, albeit that your decision was 'ridiculously eccentric', hats off to you! I only have to walk for 7 minutes to get to my garage. My friends consider me 'ridiculously eccentric' for not having a 'modern' but I'm just not interested
