Boris 1964 2 door saloon

Post by Boris64 »

We bought Boris last October after an ebay sale ended without a winning Bid. A quick call from Istanbul to North Wales and we were liable to collect the following weekend.

Boris was bought two weeks before my daughters 17th birthday and the rest would be inevitable.

I have spent far too many hours on numerous Morris Minor websites, principally this one, enjoying the hard won expertise and opinions learnt over many years. The gods of I.T. permitting, I will now attempt to share my limited and humble efforts. Scarcely a restoration but a few fixes.

Boris, I now know to be a Dual Personality Minor, for a while assuming this to mean starts/doesn't start. 1098 engine with heater pipes running on the carb side of the engine, late pattern lights, open glove boxes, sprung steering wheel, duo-tone interior and all delightfully original.

Having spent the previous 12 years off the road, the second owner 'secured' an Mot with what appear to be the original crossply tyres, more square than circular and with what can only have been a failing memory of the meaning of 'stop'. Owner number 3 bought Doris (unaware of an impending sex change), drove maybe 10 miles, then to his garage for a further 9 months with the usual plans.

Saturday in October saw my daughter and I, trailer in tow, escort an elderly lady into the sunlight for gender realignment.

Boris had no hope of starting but the tea and cakes were good, so a few pounds lighter we headed south. A spontaneous visit to my absent aunt near Shrewsbury and we were able to reject a road side cash offer for Boris that reinforced our new found auto trading expertise, (we think!).

At the bottom of the section were you write there is a box 'Choose file' attach your picture from there, sometimes if its too big a file it wont up load in which case you will need to re size and try again! :D

David,

Thanks for the advice, I've tried several times so I assume it must be the file size or apple format.

I'll sort this out when I get to a pc.

After you have selected the file click on preview and keep an eye on the bottom left of your browser.
There should be a little message about the file uploading and what percentage has been done.
It may be somewhere else depending on your browser.

Nice and shiney and your daughter looks very pleased!

You could make a vast difference to the front seats comfort with some new straps. If your getting new foam as well you will have to take a piece of the old stuff as they dont make them the correct shape any more for the 2 tone seats.

Many thanks for the comments and apologies for the rather wordy format. I'm writing the story after the event and now find I wish I had taken more helpful photos. What follows is a general ramble of how I got to where Boris now is. Endure :D

14.10.12 First things first - selecting go mode.
Having decanted from the trailer and ensured that everything rotated as intended, access to a blind side flanker and No.8 was enough to tempt me into a bump start. The result was forward motion under Boris' own 'power' - just enough that he had to be pushed back over the near flat pavement.
Our local auto parts shop (the type that no longer exist, where all the answers are in their heads and the BMC parts are gathering dust) supplied points, condenser, rotor-arm, plugs, dizzi cap, and leads and with a quick set up life was restored with an occasional misfire under load.[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

Oops same photo twice.

20.10.12 A trip to Halfords resulted in new tyres all round and an unrelated brake failure half a mile from home. Not too eventful thanks to the hand brake. A good trawl through the numerous MMOC online debates on the pros and cons of brake servos and I committed to replace the whole braking system and add a servo. Boris 'benefits' from the luxury of 8" front drums so......

29.10.12 ......with a box full of brake cylinders, shoes, hoses, copper pipes and a flaring tool, together with a shiny new servo kit I set about rebuilding the braking system.
Having removed all four wheels and positioned the car on axle stands as high as I could, the cause of the brake failure manifest itself in a rear off-side drum full of brake fluid.
Replacing all the mechanical bits wasn't too tricky and I was able to re-use all the unions with a few mods to the supplied pipes.
The one person bleed kit was simplicity itself once I secured the assistance of my daughter.
To my eternal (if I live that long) shame I didn't renew the seals in the master cylinder - I wasn't/am not clear what bore the cylinder is and in the interests of progress have put the task off to another day. Note to self. I hope never to regret this.
I'm not especially proud of the 'machine work' to the inlet manifold for the servo vacuum pipe but tapping metal is far from my speciality. Instead, a drill, some 'metal glue stuff' and a perfect fit.
I elected to mount the servo unit in the well on the off-side which involved relocating the washer bottle to a temporary position in the battery tray - easy, although I note from the photo that the white stuff looks a bit like the battery may be leaking. To do!
The horn, then not working, was also moved a short distance. A good shake, the judicious application of the percussion instrument and the inhabitants were freed. A quick scratch at the contacts and Boris is now able to emit a joyful and smile inducing note just before impact.
Given that the brakes were shot when we bought Boris I am unable to comment on the before and after servo experience other than to say he now pulls up sharp and straight and with no unusual effort.
From a good look under the car its clear it is all original and has never been patched or welded - happy day.[frame]Image[/frame]
