pipe queery

Post by cococola »

On my 1969 moggie 1098cc the airfilter housing has no metal pipe attached on the bottom(just a hole)
Will this cause me any problems with my car and should I get another housing to replace it with?
many thanks
Alan

Very common problem - they vibrate and fall off..... Handy to have it if you run the car in winter - when the pipe should be directed at the exhaust to pick up some heat to try to stop carb icing. Otherwise not critical - unless you want the car to be 'original'..

The other consideration is that the pipe acts as a sielncer for the air intake - there is a noticeably different noise when the tube is missing.

I'm sure a garage/engineering shop would join it back together again for a nominal charge.

IF you have the missing pipe - mine fell off 'at speed' on a busy motorway - there was no way I was stopping to look for it........

You could cut off the spout from that old metal funnel you never use and push it down the hole.
Maybe brazing it in?
A lick of paint and voila!

The wretched casing is hopeless for air flow.....I modified mine to fit the larger carb, and I couldn't get it to run well - even with no filter inside. Swapped for a K&N taper cone filter - MUCH better running, but quite noisy when the throttle is opened any serious amount. However - this is drowned out by the roar from the exhaust, so it doesn't matter......

What air filter do you have on your TR7, Roy?

Just the standard paper element. It rarely gets any more than half-beans.....I use it as a cruiser - not a racer.
