BHP for 948 and 1275A+

Post by andy.pointeer »

I am in the process of buying a 4 door saloon and at some time in the past its had an engine change from a 948cc to a 1275cc A+. The insurance company has asked for the BHP for both the standard 948cc and the 1275cc.

Does anyone know these BHPs, or can you direct me to were I can find them

Many Thanks

I believe the 948 is 37bhp. Unusual request from the insurers.

The standard 948cc engine gave 37bhp at 4750 rpm or 50lb ft @ 2500rpm

The standard 1275cc high compression engine (ex Marina/Ital) gives 69 lbf ft at 2500rpm.

Thanks for the quick response.

Is there a BHP for the 1275, do you think they will understand 69 lbf ft at 2500rpm

It varies from 55 to 60 depending on engine spec. They are more likley to be asking if the brakes and suspension have been upgraded to match -I would have thought!

Use a different insurer.

If they want your business they will.

A comparison of the power outputs will indicate that there has been an increase in power but not sufficient to scare them off.

Generally the 1275cc is considered in standard Marina/Ital form to give out about 50 - 60bhp

Generally BHP is nowadays old hat and engine specification is given in engine torque and that is why I cannot find a works specification for a standard 1275 Marina/Ital engine.

No doubt there is a magic formula for transposing the two different types of outputs.

Thanks for update, much appreciated

The car does have disc brakes and telescopic shocks and this was indicated, but BHP was also requested.
I am adding this car to the insurance for my Traveller currently with FJ.

Thanks again for information

Andy,

We use Heritage Insurance for a well-modified 1380 Minor and the cost is £127 per year, including roadside recovery Europe wide. Without the recovery it is £92. They have the complete spec of the car, and it does not seem to make much, if any difference to the insurance cost.

http://www.heritagecarinsurance.co.uk/

I have had to use them a couple of times to get us home in the last 18 years - once in the middle of France and they arrived in 50 minutes and organised the whole home repatriation for us, and the second time near Lincoln, when a head gasket failure meant we could not get back home to Oxford.

The problem in France was a broken 'nearly new' timing belt, so that was ditched once we got the car back, and the second time was a problem with the block that meant rebuilding the complete engine with a spare 1275 block that we had.

Very highly recommended - might be worth a quote?

Thanks Richard.

I have now updated my insurance from 1 car/1 person, adding the new car and the wife, so now a 2 car/2 person policy for additional cost of £38.

I was not asked for BHP on the second call, so FJ not consistent on what they require.

I will fully check out all insurance companies at next renewal for 2 car/2 person policy.

Thanks again to all who provided information.
