Re: Wishful thinking?

I stopped looking at that Series 2 pickup on ebay when I saw the twin rear lights including indicators... Just seen a fairly mediocre saloon sell for over £2000 with holes in one chassis leg and nasty patches on the other one, centre crossmember and sills. Ok because its 1958 so MOT exempt :o The ow...

Re: radial tyres

I tend to use 155s on my own cars purely because they fill the wheelarches a bit better than a 145. Not to the extent of a 5.20-14 crossply but it helps, especially with the high cut rear wings on a Series 2... I do agree though that the handling isa bit sharper with 145s though. Having said that I'...

Done similar with my Series 1 Land Rover with the roof off. Drive into bay, stand up and walk off the back. Who needs door space... :)

Re: Unknown wheels

I think early Minor hubcaps will fit the A30/Sprite wheels and can be obtained either plain or with the M in the middle.
It's Series MM type hubcap although the MM running gear (axle/ hubs etc) did linger on into early Series 2 Minors.

Re: Confused Identity Convertible?

Yes, but you can see where the late wiper motor bracket has been attached, either with screws or lumpy plug welds. Not original spotwelds. I'd agree that its a proper '53 convertible underneath all the later stuff that's been heaped on it over the years. I'd quite enjoy having that car and chance to...

Re: New exhaust is very noisy

A lot of new exhausts I've encountered seem way too noisy. I suspect its a generic silencer used in production which isn't to original spec and not really suitable. People put up with it because its an old car so noisy, and don't all Minors make that overrun noise etc etc.. Well, yes most of them do...

Re: Austin 1000 pick up

Doesn't look too dodgy. An Austin badged LCV thats had a home made rear body fitted to it sometime in its life which isn't unusual. It's had its Austin grill replaced with a Morris one and a car bumper fitted, but theres plenty of valid reasons for doing that - slight accident knock for eg.... Wethe...

Re: 2door complete roof replacement ( Has anyone done this)

I've cut plenty of roofs off when making convertibles. Even without the convertible stiffening they rarely move more than a mm or so when the final cut is made. Best to brace the door gaps first, and poss across the car between the B posts to be sure.

Re: Interesting scrapyards in/near Norwich?

I rescued the remains of a '33 Hudson Terraplane from there years ago with the help of Brian G. All the 'modern' side had been cleared and the older area was being cleared then (about 10 years back). What hadn't been cleared was very much returning to nature. Extremely picturesque and a fascinating ...

The cup of tea that was thrust into my hands when I got to the stand was very welcome too. Not many clubs offering that level of hospitality :)

Re: Series 11 GPO van windscreen

If you've got suitable rubber seal (COH Baines are the best if you haven't), I'd fit the seal to the windscreen frame first and cut it slightly over length, ie: you have to squeeze the rubber up slightly to get it all in. This allows for a bit of shrinkage over time and stops gaps opening up on the ...

Very interesting. Not sure what force mine was with. Reg BBJ.... Its a factory fit alternator as wiring loom is specific for it. I assumed it was to power radio but may just have been for lights and plenty of stop start use.

Re: Seats advice please

Yes my Panda car has rubber diaphragms too. I understand they were part of the Police spec (to cope with greater wear and tear) along with the plain door trims (cost I presume) and the large positive earth alternator (to power the radio). I assume the diaphragms are a standard BMC/Leyland part, poss...

Ok, so any know when bronze trunnions were discontinued. I managed to pick up a set at an autojumble this year - now earmarked for the '49 saloon. :) Presumably they were replaced with steel ones due to cost, or was it wear rate?

Re: Wheel nuts for Marina wheels

Sorry for the mild thread hijack, but I acquired some TR7 wheels (look like Marina but wider) but there's no taper at all for the nuts just a flat surface. So what sort of wheel nuts do TR7s use? This may be a question for Roy here... I know they had plastic wheel trims very similar to late Marinas/...

Re: NWL 576

Letting apprentices restore a historically important car which would be scrutinised 50 years on may not have been the best move in hindsight. However at the time I guess it made sense - no one would have been that concerned wether the tie plates had round holes in or which way the inner wing flanges...

Re: Tonneu Cover

I bought one for my convertible, but bottled out of drilling the dashboard to fit the lift the dot fasteners as that's still the 63 yr old original paint so never used it. Anyway having got the hang of raising and lowering the hood in moments without leaving the drivers seat, its never been too much...

Re: MMOC National Rally 2017

I can remember going to a Northern Regional Rally that was like a mini National (Somewhere up the A1 in the late 90s) which was a big well organised do and a great day out , not sure why the format didn't catch on. The impression I've had of Nationals over the years is that the further to the extrem...

Try Tippers Vintage Plates - very good for proper authentic period plates of various styles.
