tyre pressure?

Post by mrspiggy »

Hi there, After several years of being a member I have finally found a moggy HURRAY!!!!
So I know this will sound strange but I only got "PU" yesterday and thought the tyres look like they need some air in. Looking at the handbook it says the tryes are 5.00-14 and take 22lb. My tyres are
145-14, so what tyre pressure would you put in as 22 doesn't seem right?
please advise
Sharon :-?

26psi all round is about right for 145/14's.

Thanks for that! I will make a note in my manual. I will no doubt be asking questions in the future, hoping to tune in on all the wealth of knowledge you guys have.
Thanks again

For you info when tyre widths sizes are give in inches (5.00X14") then
this indicates that the tyre is a CROSS PLY, nasty things which belong to the dark ages. Widths in metric (145 X14") are RADIAL PLY and are much better all round for the Minor. 145 is the proper size for your car and you MUST check that ALL of your tyres are RADIALS it is dangerous
to mix the two types. I would try 26 psi all round. If the centre of the tread starts to wear more quickly than both the inner and outer edges
then reduce the pressures slightly.

crossplies do have their place on some cars, but i agree that Minors handle better. The final handbook from around 1970 gives pressures for 145x 14 radials as an option, which are 24 at the front and 26 at the back

I found having the fronts at 24 the steering was a bit mushy but improved when I increased to 26 all round.

it is dangerous
to mix the two types
Actually illegal in the UK to mix them on the same axle.

If you have two sets of two, then the radials must legally be only fitted to the rear axle.

But then you'd have to carry two spares...

I know that you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I am not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant.

Must admit, I prefer 30psi too, it just feels a lot better, and also increases the fuel economy slightly.

I would imagine thatrunning 155's you would need your 30 psi to make it steerable and to stop the tyres wobbling on the rims.
