Right, managed to get the hub nut off. tried with an actual socket first, but it kept slipping off and was just damaging the edge of the nut, so used the chisel trick and managed to loosen it and then used the socket, did hit a small notch on the inside of the axle though, but it is very small and won't rub the shaft, I checked. Phew!

I found that the inside race of the bearing was able to move in and out and side to side by about a mm, it was that that was giving the movememntand not the hub I think so will get a new one ordered.

Questions

do you think it was this that was causing the movement?

do you think this may have been the cause of the vibration at speed as well?

finally is there a less hammery and chisely way of removing the hub nut?

Could be - was it a Chinese bearing? Vibration - well maybe..... but not confident. The chisel works well - as you found out!!

It is a BIG nut - and locked - and set so the rotation of the wheel tends to keep it tight!

managed to find another hub, but that seems more worn than mine. mine has 'tracks' on the inside, fine but you can feel them, but the bearing was a tight fit. in the replacement hub the bearing slips quite easily in so i suppose the 'new' one is rubbish, so ill stick to the old one. but how on earth do you get the old oil seal out of that darned thing?? :x

oh and need a new hub nut as chisel marks over the old one, but this nut from the DRIVERS / OFFSIDE - is that known as the left or right side for the sake of ordering?

Just bang the seal out - from the inside. Just reuse the nut! If it pains you - file off the worst of the marks. New nuts have been reported to be v poor quality. That would be the Right side of the car - RH nut.

ill try again tomorrow when kids are at school and fresh. by the way which way round does the bearing go, it seems the same either side??!!??!!

Nut looks fine - use it! Keep banging....... I don't see it matters which way round the bearing goes - but probably best to fit it with the markings outwards.

okay, update. I have put a new diff on and managed to change the rear wheel bearings and put it all back together and actually the car runs much better. i have also loosened the engine steady, and again much better. BUT the noise and vibration is still there. im beginning to think it IS the exhaust! but how can I alter it so it doesn't rub where it leaves the engine bay? A hammer?

Hi Jane, mine was rubbing there and making a noise. I discovered that the first exhaust support, before the muffler ,was cracked and the exhaust had dropped down a bit. Without the support there the whole exhaust system was vibrating, causing a horrible rattle. Once I welded it up the clearance problem was solved. :)

umn... what bracket? I have two on my saloon, one right at the back of the car, and one at the back 'within' the wheel arch - there is nothing forward of the rear wheel... is this a problem?!

Sorry, mine is a van. Yours is as it should be, so the one to check is the one before the bend over the rear axle.

it's tight and new, it seems like maybe the end of the exhaust where it bends isn't right maybe? Slightly too long? meaning it only just clears and then rubs

I had a funny high speed drone that I traced to having knocked the distributor when I changed the condenser...
