1955 SPLIT SCREEN, FRONT BEARINGS??
HI does anyone now if the bearings for a 1000, will go onto 1955 split screen 803 or are they diffrent?
also if anyone has done them, what part number will i need, as been on ESM and they list bearings for the split scren but only 1948 to 1954??? and mine is 1955??

If the bearings are separate from the brake drums then they are the same as the M1000. 1948-54 the bearings were built into the the brake drums and the wheels were held on by bolts not the later studs and nuts.

Yep the bearings are the same, just put the new ones on (GHK1142) waste of time though the wheel is far worse(PLAY),
but after a bit of mucking around i remebered reading about a mini's front wheel bearing, same problem!
the guy said he got round the problem of the new bearing play by reducing the length of the bearing spacer that sits between the inner and outer bearing,
now i know what your going to say! "BAD IDEA DONT DO IT"........but i did and it work lovely....
i used wet and dry paper on a flat peice of wood on the bench and kept wearing a thou down,
this took a long time and soon got feed up so i used a dremmel ginding wheel and took it down about 1mm, then flatend the rough surface back with wet and dry paper again..........tried it on and off the car until i got the result
i think the new bearing are metric and the old spacer is imperial???????
either way im happy it worked

This is VERY DANGEROUS 'shade tree engineering' - absolutely not correct. On a Mini the bearings are taper roller type - and the centre spacer thickness sets the loading on the angled rollers. And yes - just sometimes a single thou has to be removed from the spacer to pre-load the rollers correctly. THIS IS NOT THE CASE with Minor bearings - you are at great risk of seized /collapsed bearings. DO NOT drive the car until you get a NEW set of bearings fitted correctly to the hub. Are the bearings assembled correctly in the hub - thrust faces facing each other ?? matters not now since you have ruined the centre spacer and damaged the bearings............

I have put the inner races, thick side in?? Is that correct
I can get another bearing spacer from euro-moss

meant outer races thick side in, like in this diagram,
seems alot of people have had trouble with this???

Thrust faces must oppose - they can either face each other or be back to back - but they must oppose.

they were face to face, but still the wheel wobled?
not had the car long? and not used to minors, (more mini's)
so if the bearings are faced right and the bearing spacer is correct(un grinded)doh!........why such a bad fit?
by the way ordered a spacer and is on route
MG's seem to have this problem and they get around it by adding shims,
do you think the actuall bearings are at fault here?

Are you sure that the wheels are not wobbling on the wheel nuts? This is a problem on the earlier Series MM/2 wheels where the bolt holes wear.
When you buy new bearings take the old bearings with you so that they can check the sizes with a micrometer

thankyou mike perry. yes i checked that and there fine,
i did the drivers side today, they wasnt as bad as the near side, and the NEW bearing had a little play in it but i done the castle nut up quite tight and it was ok.
i did notice that the bearing spacer was diffrent from the other side, but measured it at 1.5"
at the moment im waiting for a new spacer to arrive,

thrust faces? does this mean the bit with the plastic ring around the bearing?

well ive learnt over the last 24hrs that the thrust face is as follows:-
1. the outer part of the bearing that is the thickest SIDE is the thrust face
2. when you remove the bearings from the hub somtimes it has thrust stamped into the outer race
3. someone said the two thickest sideof the outer races need to facing each other and touching the bearing spacer,
