If you have a workshop manual I think its covered in Section R34/35 (not got manual with me) you should have triangular plate fitted under the rear side windows for the top fixing.

I am in the process of buying a 4 door saloon and at some time in the past its had an engine change from a 948cc to a 1275cc A+. I have a Certified Copy of Factory Record that I purchased (£50+vat and postage)from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust and this gives - Date of Build and Date of Dispatch. The V5 should give the date of first registration.

These should be close enough to determine the birth.
